Reported West Ham interest in quality player is actually rather dumbfounding – Opinion

|

West Ham United have been linked with a number of players this summer as Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos look to take us to another level and continue to build on last season’s encouraging campaign.

Pablo Fornals has joined us at the London Stadium now, whilst we have allegedly targeted the likes of Ozan Kabak and Maxi Gomez, which we have already highlighted in a previous article as signs of the club getting things right with their recruitment plans this summer.

However, a story from Spain has recently emerged and if there is any truth to it – which for the record, we cannot imagine there is – it would be really dumbfounding.

According to Sport (via Sport Witness), West Ham are thought to hold an interest in Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Now, he might be a very good ‘keeper on his day and could be a steal if he is available for around the €20million (£17.8m) mark, but, he is hardly needed at the moment, is he?

Lukasz Fabianski has been sensational for us since joining last summer – he made the most saves in the Premier League last season and won our Hammer of the Year award because of how impressive he was after all –  and, despite not getting any younger, the Poland international should still have a couple more years as our number one provided he does not have a disastrous period in between the sticks.

We have also recently signed Roberto and David Martin on free transfers, so we already have three solid goalkeepers available to us, making the links to Cillessen all the more strange and dubious.

With Sport being based in Barcelona, maybe they are just trying to drum up some speculation and have used us as a potential destination to attract other clubs? That certainly seems to be the case to us.
