Report: West Ham one of many clubs to make offer for wantaway PL international

The agent of Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny, Alaa Nazmy, has confirmed that West Ham were one of a handful of clubs to make an offer for the Egyptian midfielder.

The Irons, as well as the likes of Leicester City, AC Milan and Valencia, all attempted to sign the Gunners holding midfielder over the summer transfer window, with Unai Emery admitting to Sky Sports News that it would be better if Elneny, as well as Shkodran Mustafi, leave the club.

Elneny did eventually leave, joining Besiktas on-loan for the season, and in an interview with Time Sport via Goal, the midfielder’s agent admitted that a multitude of teams came in for the former Basel man before the Turkish giants made their offer.

Nazmy said: “Milan and Roma tried to sign the player during the last winter transfer window. But the negotiations didn’t work then, and he received more than one offer as well. Elneny received a lot of offers last summer, led by Leicester City, West Ham United and Valencia, but Besiktas managed to settle the deal with Arsenal.”

West Ham’s summer transfer window was an effective one, with records from Transfermarkt showing that the east London side sold or released 11 players this summer, with three of the departed names central midfielders, and the addition of Elneny could have been a useful one.

Whilst the Arsenal midfielder has largely been a squad player for the Gunners, Elneny’s athleticism in the centre of the pitch could have been a useful commodity for West Ham, especially with Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere two names that are frequently on the injury table for the Irons.

Elneny isn’t the flashiest of midfielders nor the best player in the box-to-box position in the Premier League, but the Egyptian would have been a handy signing for West Ham, and a good squad player to have for the season.
