Report: Championship duo battling to take impressive West Ham midfielder on loan

West Ham United’s Josh Cullen is a wanted man this summer, although it should not come as a surprise.

The young midfielder was exceptional for Charlton Athletic last season in their promotion-winning efforts to the Championship and it is hardly a shock that the Addicks are keen on reuniting with him once again this summer for the 2019/20 campaign.

However, London News Online are also reporting that Queens Park Rangers are also interested in taking the 23-year-old on loan as well, who are thought to be the front-runners for the Republic of Ireland international’s signature.

Cullen was a pivotal for Charlton last season in League One, making 35 appearances scoring one goal and providing five assists (Transfermarkt).

Those performances had earned him a call-up to the national side, although he is yet to make an outing for Mick McCarthy’s side despite impressing in recent training sessions.

Cullen admitted back in May that his desire was to return to West Ham and give something Manuel Pellegrini to think about when deciding his first-team.

“I’ve always said that the main focus is to go back to West Ham and get a first-team place there,” he told London News Online.

“I’ll go back. They want me back to go and do pre-season and try and make my time there successful. Get in the first-team and warrant that place. That’s what I’m looking to do and hopefully that will happen.”

However, with the likes of Mark Noble, Jack Wilshere, Carlos Sanchez and Pedro Obiang all vying for the place alongside Declan Rice in the centre of midfield, a loan spell in the Championship may help him take his game to the next level and truly be in a position to challenge those men for a spot in the side.
