Opinion: West Ham’s latest agreement is more proof that they’re going back to what they do best

|

West Ham over the last few years have been characterised by instability, inadequacy and inconsistency, but under Manuel Pellegrini, that’s changing. The Hammers have impressed under the manager on the field, and they appear to be getting their old spirit back.

What the Hammers have been known for over everything else over the years is their focus on youth talent. The Academy of Football has given rise to some of England’s best ever talent, and after a recent lull, Pellegrini appears to be reinstating the focus on this side of the club.

That’s been reaffirmed this week, with the news that youngster Ben Johnson has signed a new deal with the club. He made his Premier League debut against Man City earlier this season and looked good, and it’s clear that he’s got a very bright future at the London Stadium.

This, of course, comes during the incredible rise of Declan Rice. Rice, who was recently called into the England senior team, has impressed so far this season, and he’s emerged as one of the Premier League’s best and most consistent young players. Offering a perfect balance of defensive consistency and passing ability, he’s been the perfect link between our defence and our midfield.

With his rise, and the club’s decision to tie down Johnson long-term, it’s clear that the focus is shifting at West Ham. There’s more attention being placed on youth development, and as we’ve already seen that can pay off handsomely.

Under Pellegrini, we’re finding out identity again, and whilst the improved results have been great to see, that’s arguably an even more impressive feat that the Chilean has achieved this term.
