Opinion: West Ham’s demise this season could provide the refresh that the club needs long-term

|

The ongoing situation at West Ham United is an absolutely dire one. The Hammers are in real danger of facing the drop and playing in the Championship next season, and whilst that would be an awful outcome for the Irons, it could provide them with the refresh that they need from top to bottom.

All the way through the club there are changes that are needed. Starting with the playing staff, the likes of Pablo Zabaleta, Winston Reid, Carlos Sanchez, Jack Wilshere, Andriy Yarmolenko and Manuel Lanzini are all either on huge wages and aren’t performing or have had too many injury problems, and getting rid of many of those would come as a brilliant step in the right direction.

Then there’s the issue with the manager. David Moyes is a good manager in his own right, but the Scottish gaffer has become banded into the same bracket as the likes of Tony Pulis and Sam Allardyce as tacticians who come into a club just to keep them up with little building upon that afterwards.

Moyes has got a contract until the end of next season at the London Stadium, and whilst he’ll likely want the chance to get the Hammers up should he take them down, it’s time for West Ham to appoint a manager somewhere in between Moyes and Manuel Pellegrini.

However, most importantly, West Ham fans need to continue in their efforts to unsettle Karren Brady, David Gold and David Sullivan. The Hammers are doing all they can to try and force the board out, and if this continues and the Irons go down, they may be able to get their toxic, cancerous owners out of the club.

Will we sign anyone?

Yes

No

It certainly is a long shot and it won’t be at all easy for the Hammers to get what they want, but should West Ham fall to relegation this season and the changes that the supporters want to see eventually go ahead then all the pain that they’ll suffer will at least be for something, and hopefully if things do go down this way the Irons make a quick return to the Premier League under better owners.
