Opinion: West Ham’s #1 central midfield target should be obvious as club probe options

|

West Ham’s hunt for a central midfielder in January is no secret. The Hammers have been linked with a number of options, and a lot of the fans will have set up Tweet notifications on West Ham insider ExWHUemployee on Twitter hoping for the best regarding some signings in the new few weeks.

However, as the updates have been coming through for ten days now, it seems that things are still undetermined when it comes to bringing in a new midfield option, even if a few names have been floated about. The highest-profile of those is Benfica’s Gedson Fernandes, but he shouldn’t be the priority.

Aside from Fernandes, a lot of the Irons are aware of the fact that their club is looking into the signings of Sander Berge and Joe Allen, and of the three players, the one that we believe David Moyes and David Sullivan should be looking towards is the Norwegian Genk midfielder Berge.

The 21-year-old has already been playing on one of the biggest stages in club football this season in the Champions League with Genk, and he certainly gave a good account of himself during the six group games, contributing at both ends of the pitch in Europe.

The young midfield man, in a defensive sense, averaged an impressive 1.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 2.2 clearances per game, whilst going forward he also contributed 0.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game (WhoScored), so he clearly has the talent to hack it at the highest level.

Will this transfer window be a big one?

Yes

No

Whatever happens, Moyes needs a new midfield man to add to his options, and whilst only time will tell who the Hammers end up signing this month, if we were in charge there’s only one man we would look to bring in, and that’s Sander Berge.
