Opinion: West Ham would be doing more harm than good by swooping for 30-goal striker

|

West Ham fans have had it good this summer. The club have brought in both Sebastien Haller (BBC) and Pablo Fornals (BBC), although it looks like their spending isn’t done yet, as The Daily Record have claimed that the Irons are interested in Rangers’ striker Alfredo Morelos this summer.

The Colombian proved to be hard work last season, and despite his 30 goals and 12 assists for Steven Gerrard, Transfermarkt, he’ll be more remembered for his five red cards than he will his goals.

Whether or not West Ham will make a move for the fiery frontman is yet to be seen, but with Gerrard issuing a strict timeline on his striker’s future, The Daily Record, Manuel Pellegrini had better work fast if he does want to sign the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer (BBC).

However, with Haller wrapped up and Javier Hernandez and Michail Antonio set to play back-up to the Frenchman, the need for another striker is certainly questionable, especially when that striker is one famed for losing his head in big games.

The Gers won’t want to sell the striker unless they get a substantial offer either. Back in December, as the January window approached, TEAMtalk claimed that Gerrard was bracing himself for offers and that the club valued Morelos at around £20m.

That fee has obviously put a number of clubs off, as his temperament and ability to lose a game as well as win one makes him an extremely risky player to be willing to fork out £20m on.

The Hammers were recently linked with the free signing of Mario Balotelli by The Mirror, although ExWHUemployee claimed on Twitter that the Italian was unlikely to sign as Pellegrini was worried about his attitude.

If the Chilean was concerned with Balotelli’s attitude then Morelos should be a no-hoper. The striker, like Balotelli, may bring goals, but he’s volatile and is capable of being given his marching orders at any given time, so the chances are that the management at the London Stadium will turn a blind eye to the Morelos links.
