Opinion: West Ham simply cannot get this key man back quickly enough

|

On the weekend we saw both the best and the worst of one particular West Ham man. The Irons fell to a shocking 3-0 defeat away at Turf Moor, losing to goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood before an own goal condemned them to their defeat.

However, it was one of those games where the Irons lacked confidence at the back and looked very poor, although the man who we saw the worst of was directly at fault for the third goal, as it was the stand-in goalkeeper Roberto who stepped up and punched the ball into his own net.

Aside from the mistake, though, Roberto did pull off ten saves in the defeat and at times he was the man keeping the score to just three. However, he just isn’t good enough and has proven to be a liability at times, as was the case when he flapped out at a corner and punched into his own net.

That just isn’t the kind of incident that would have happened had their number one gloveman been in goal, and it serves as just another reminder that getting Lukasz Fabianski back in the side is an absolute priority and his return to first-team action cannot come soon enough.

The Irons saw their Polish shot-stopper voted as the club’s Hammer of the Year last season (whufc.com), making him the first goalkeeper to win the award since Shaka Hislop did so 20 years ago in 1999. However, now he’s injured and the sooner he’s back in goal the better.

Do West Ham need January signings?

Yes

No

Hopefully, the former Arsenal and Swansea man is going to be back to fitness sooner rather than later and will be ready to get back in goal for Manuel Pellegrini’s side as soon as possible, but it could be a long way off, which is only bad news for the fans.
