Opinion: West Ham shown exactly what they’ve been missing by midweek classic

|

West Ham may have been dumped out of the FA Cup by West Bromwich Albion in the 4th round, but one particular man from the Hammers has still got a run in the competition, as last night we all got to see the impressive Nathan Holland turn out for Oxford United against Newcastle United.

The young winger is set to spend the second half of the season on-loan at the League One side, and whilst he quite obviously has the talent to star for West Ham given his searing pace, eye for goal and ability to beat a man, and it was the loanee who starred last night late on.

The League One side found themselves 2-0 down at home to the Premier League side, yet after pulling it back to 2-1 and deep into injury time in the second half, Holland stepped up and buried a superb volley from the edge of the box, sending the game to injury time.

When watching that volleyed finish, it’s hard to imagine of the current West Ham squad who would be the man who could score that goal had West Ham been in the position that Oxford were in last night. If anything the Hammers would have crumbled if they were in that position.

Holland is clearly a top player. He’s yet to score a league goal for Oxford, but he truly lit up the Kassam Stadium with his wonderful strike and, in truth, he is exactly what the Irons are missing at the moment with plenty of pace, dynamism and cutting edge out in wide areas.

Should Nathan Holland have been loaned?

Yes

No

Next season, assuming that the Hammers stay up in the Premier League, they could well have both Nathan Holland and Grady Diangana on opposite flanks, and the pair of young lively wide-men are exactly what the Irons need right now, which makes the decision to loan them both seem even odder.
