Opinion: West Ham owners deserve praise for transfer policy ahead of busy summer

|

It could be an eventful summer ahead at West Ham, particularly in regard to the striking department, with all four first team strikers rumoured to be heading for the exit.

Various outlets report that the futures of Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez, Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez are all in doubt, with the likes of Salomon Rondon and Moussa Marega reportedly lined up as potential replacements.

Whilst those two names would be an upgrade on the likes of Carroll and Perez, the club should do all it can to hang onto Arnautovic, and deserves praise for backing Pellegrini in January and keeping him amid serious interest from China and his desire to leave.

If sold, the owners would have undoubtedly come under fire from the same fans who decry a lack of ambition. Yes, there is no denying the fact that in previous years they have held back on spending money. But, having spent £100m last summer, they showed support for the manager and now they seem prepared to go after strikers who would be an improvement on the current crop.

There is an argument that Arnautovic should have been let go, since he has only scored three goals since January. But his lack of form is because of him, and his mentality has been questioned throughout his career, which we have also been witness to.

Going after a player who has scored the third most Champions League goals this year in Marega feels like a positive step, and a sign of encouragement that the board have their sights set on qualifying for Europe, which should be appreciated.
