Opinion: West Ham on the brink when welcoming Arsenal to town

|

Last weekend we all saw what the Hammers are capable of when they turned up to Stamford Bridge last weekend and beat the Blues on their own patch 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Aaron Cresswell. However, that win didn’t get the Irons out of the woods, and they very quickly undid the hard work.

That hard work was undone by the fact that they were utterly toothless against Wolves at Molineux, falling to a 2-0 defeat and failing to impress anyone who watched on whilst simultaneously piling the pressure back onto the struggling Manuel Pellegrini.

At this stage, it looks very much like the Chilean is being assessed on a game by game basis, and if the Hammers fall to consecutive defeats, even after that Chelsea win, he could find that his time at The London Stadium is up, and that makes the upcoming visit of Arsenal so crucial.

Fortunately for the Hammers, their visitors on Monday night haven’t won a game in their last nine. However, the way football seems to work, West Ham fans will be confident that the Gunners might break that tough run when they turn out on Monday night.

That was the case when they welcomed Tottenham to Stratford a couple of weeks ago. Spurs hadn’t won a Premier League away game since January until they won 3-2 at the London Stadium, and the last thing the Irons need is the embarrassment of being the team to provide both Spurs and Arsenal with some form-breaking relief.

Arsenal...

Win

Draw

Lose (again)

Should Pellegrini and co fall to defeat against Arsenal then it’s hard to see a way in which the former Real Madrid and Manchester City man is still in charge come the following Saturday against Southampton, and to see the Irons are on the brink is an understatement.
