Opinion: West Ham moving for ex-Arsenal invincible makes little sense

|

West Ham have got a couple of ex-Arsenal players on their books at the moment. Both Jack Wilshere and Lukas Fabianski turned out at The Emirates previously, and the Irons could be set to make that duo a trio by moving for a star who was part of an invincible side last season.

PAOK Salonika may have lost five of their six Europa League group stages matches, including two losses to Chelsea, but the domestic scene was very different. The Greek Super League was swept aside by PAOK, with former Arsenal man Chuba Akpom turning out for them.

The English striker has been linked with a move to West ham in The Daily Mail, although for a lot of reasons it doesn’t look like the smartest move from the Hammers, even if the young striker did win a league and cup double last season during an invincible league campaign.

In the Greek League, which is hardly renowned as a powerhouse footballing league, Akpom could only manage himself six goals and four assists in his 20 matches, Transfermarkt, and whilst the Irons are after a 3rd striker, they can surely do better.

The striker is rated at £5m according to The Daily Mail’s story, and whilst the fee is reasonable and the player himself is still just 23-years-old, the chances are that he won’t be able to convert his six-goal PAOK form to prolific Premier League form.

There is no doubting that the Hammers could do with a 3rd striker to play alongside Javier Hernandez and Sebastien Haller, but whether or not Akpom is that man is a real conundrum. Football’s a funny game and he may find a home at The London Stadium should he move, but the stats don’t do the ex-Gunner any favours.
