Opinion: West Ham have a huge chance to make history this season

|

After an incredible start to life in the Europa League, history has it that West Ham should only need two more wins to secure their place in the knockout stages.

After qualifying for the UEFA Europa League group stages last season, by finishing sixth in the Premier League, West Ham have gone into their first couple of fixtures with great confidence and have come away with two impressive results.

A 2-0 win away to Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb and another 2-0 victory over Austrian side Rapid Wien, puts the Hammers at the top of the group with six points and two clean sheets.

Now, David Moyes and his squad know that they can go into these next four games confident that they can come away with maximum points each time.

In the Europa League group stages, history suggests that it normally takes 10 or more points will qualify your team to finish in the top two. This means the Hammers only need at least two wins out of four to put them in good stead for the knockout stages.

Even if we experienced a total collapse during our next four matches and we end up finishing third, we would still have a chance to compete in the UEFA Conference League.

Having said that, each fixture for West Ham is winnable and there should be no reason why Moyes and his side don’t challenge for all six wins and a spot at the top of Group H.

The team should still not get carried away but after a positive start to life with European football – there is all the chance that West Ham can go on to make history.
