Opinion: West Ham ace can prove spending isn’t necessary with storming pre-season

|

West Ham fans have known for a long time that a new striker is going to be coming in at some point soon this transfer window. However, with ExWHUemployee implying on Twitter that two forwards could be set to come in, Javier Hernandez will have to prove that Pellegrini only needs one.

The Mexican striker is the only recognised forward currently in the Hammers’ squad traveling to take part in the PL Asia Trophy in China, and should he star against Manchester City and then either Newcastle or Wolves then he might just prove to his manager that only one new striker is needed.

The lack of front-men at the club has come from the fact that both Marko Arnautovic and Lucas Perez have been sold, whilst Andy Carroll has been released at the end of his contract, and that leaves just Hernandez and Michail Antonio who can feature upfront for the Irons.

Manuel Pellegrini’s favoured system last season was the 4-2-3-1, and with only one striker being deputised in that system, bringing in a front-man and then relying on Hernandez as the second choice could be the cost-effective way of going about the summer, as opposed to bringing in two new forwards.

The 107-cap Mexican proved to be worth his salt last season, pitching in with eight goals and three assists in his 28 games in all competitions, and now that pre-season is upon us he’ll be keen to show that even at his age of 31-years-old, he can still perform at the highest level.

With 52 Premier League goals to his name across 156 games for both Manchester United and West Ham, Chicharito will be desperate to keep going at the top level, and should he be forced down the order to the club’s 3rd, or even 4th, choice forward then the 2019/20 campaign won’t be an enjoyable one for him.
