Opinion: The stats show that key West Ham man’s slow start is an anomaly

|

This season, we’ve hardly seen the best of Felipe Anderson so far in the Premier League as the Brazilian has been supposedly devoid of form and has failed to live up to the standards that he set for himself last season. A lot of that is down to the lack of goals so far, but that could change quickly.

If the winger can go onto find the net in his next couple of games in the league then anything can happen and the headlines surrounding the player will change their tune. However, the stats have shown that whilst he hasn’t scored, not a lot has been different between this season and last.

After 11 appearances in the league so far this season, Anderson has just three assists and not a single goal. After 11 games last season he’d managed three goals and one assist, though, so the goals had started flowing (Transfermarkt).

However, when you look more in-depth into the Brazilian’s stats, the stats show that Anderson’s levels haven’t dropped. If anything, he’s showing an incredible level of consistency to his numbers just without scoring. One criticism is that he’s slowed down the Hammers’ attacks this season, but the stats don’t say so.

When using WhoScored’s player comparison tool to look at Anderson’s numbers between his debut season and the current campaign, the Brazilian has recorded the exact same overall rating of 7.23, and his split of statistics have been similar.

Is Felipe Anderson having a bad season?

Yes

No

In 2018/19, Anderson was averaging more shots and key passes per game than he is this season, yet in the current campaign he’s been completing more dribbles and winning more fouls, so the differences are minor, and you’d have to imagine that sooner or later he’ll revert to his goalscoring form from last season and get on the scoresheet.
