Opinion: The plan David Moyes has to implement to give himself the best chance of winning a new deal

|

As the football world has paused for at least the next couple of weeks, this break gives fans of West Ham United a brilliant chance to take stock of where they’re at and what they need to do in the comings months, especially when the transfer window opens.

David Moyes has been in his post as the Hammer’s gaffer for around three months now and given that he was only offered an 18-month deal (BBC), taking a look at what the Scot needs to do in the transfer market to ensure he’s at the forefront of the club’s thinking at the end of next season is key.

First thing’s first, the Irons need to survive in the Premier League this season. The Hammers simply have to remain in the top flight. If GSB suffers their second relegation since purchasing the club then there is no way that David Moyes will remain in his post, so that’s the most important step.

After achieving survival, and we’re assuming that the Hammers will for the sake of this scenario, then the next step for Moyes will be to make some serious cuts to the playing staff. The likes of Roberto, Winston Reid, Arthur Masuaku, Ryan Fredericks, Pablo Zabaleta, Carlos Sanchez, Jack Wilshere, Andriy Yarmolenko, Manuel Lanzini and Albian Ajeti could all realistically be cut, and that would free up at least £490,00 per/week from the wagebill (Spotrac).

After cutting those that need to be cut, the best way for Moyes to win over the fans and the board would be to plug the gaps that can be plugged with youth players. Grady Diangana and Nathan Holland will be two of the leading candidates to step up, as well as the likes of Jeremy Ngakia and Ben Johnson who have already shown promise.

Should we keep Moyes beyond the summer?

Yes

No

Finally, though, and most importantly, the Irons needs to be clever in the transfer market. The Hammers have wasted many millions down the years, and moving towards bringing in young and hungry players has to be the way forward, something that should Moyes be able to implement would stand him in good stead amongst all associated with the Irons.
