Opinion: The next eight days won’t define West Ham’s window

|

The transfer window for Premier League clubs closes in just eight days time, and it looks like there could still be some work to be done at The London Stadium. That’s according to ExWHUemployee on Twitter, but the Hammers’ window won’t be decided between now and next Thursday.

No, quite the opposite, the Irons have got their heavy spending out of the way and are well placed to compete in the Premier League already. The scatter-gun approach that has seen West Ham sign 46 forwards in the David Gold and David Sullivan looks to have been ditched, finally, and things may finally be different.

Sebastien Haller has come in as the 46th forward, with Planet Football ranking the other 45, and whilst Haller was a well thought out signing who brings a lot to the table, the Irons made the move even earlier to bring in Pablo Fornals, the man to supply Haller with ammunition.

Manuel Pellegrini’s combined spend on that pair of £69m, (Haller £45m and Fornals £24m) might look like a lot for two players, but going for a couple of superstars is a much safer option than splurging a similar amount on six or seven players who won’t improve the squad.

Whatever happens in the next week could make for an interesting story at The London Stadium, but with little cash left to splash, West Ham’s story of the summer has already been written, and the fans shouldn’t have a lot to complain about should they endure a barren final week.

Obviously, the fans would ideally want one or maybe two more deals to help with depth to the squad, but in Haller and Fornals they’ve signed some quality, and it should go a long way to helping the Irons improve on last season’s 10th placed finish.
