Opinion: Ranking West Ham’s performances of the season as fixtures cease

|

West Ham fans have only seen their side win seven games in the Premier League this season, but that doesn’t mean that they haven’t had some great performances, and as the season has now been postponed until at least April (Sky Sports), we’re looking at our favourite West Ham displays.

This list would be a whole lot longer if we were picking the performances that have been underwhelming this season so far, and the Carabao Cup defeat to Oxford United would no doubt top the list, but instead, we’re trying to give you all something to smile at, so here we go.

How many points will we get this season?

Without further ado, we’re starting with what we believe is the Hammers’ 3rd most impressive display of the season, and it came back under the reign of Manuel Pellegrini at the London Stadium…

#3 West Ham 2-0 Manchester United

When West Ham United welcomed Manchester United to the London Stadium earlier this season it was just the Hammers’ seventh game of the season and their 6th in the Premier League, and it was a game that the fans wouldn’t forget in a hurry either, as Manuel Pellegrini extended his side’s run to four wins in six without defeat during a memorable clash (Transfermarkt).

Goals from the man of the match Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Cresswell (WhoScored), with the latter’s strike coming in the form of a wonderful free-kick, secured the Hammers a 2-0 win, and whilst they struggled to maintain their form after this game, it was still a huge result and a huge performance.

#2 Liverpool 3-2 West Ham

As strange as it may seem, the second most impressive performance from the Hammers this season that we’ve chosen for this list came in a game that ended in defeat for David Moyes’ side. Whilst the Hammers’ recent trip to Anfield failed to deliver any points, though, what it did bring for the fans was hope that survival can be achieved, and against any other side the spirited Irons’ display would likely have brought a win with it.

This was a game in which Moyes watched his side fight back to lead, with an Issa Diop header levelling the score before Pablo Fornals, on as a substitute, bagged the travelling Londonder’s second to make it 2-1. A goal each from Mo Salah and Sadio Mane won the game for the home side, but this was a display that gave many in claret and blue hope of survival, and they’ve since climbed out of the relegation zone (Premierleague.com).

#1 Chelsea 0-1 West Ham

After Pellegrini masterminded his side’s 2-0 win over Manchester United, not many fans would have predicted that they wouldn’t win any of their next eight games in all competitions, and even fewer would have predicted that the game they’d end that rotten run with would come away at Stamford Bridge.

Football works in weird and wonderful ways, though, and when the Hammers travelled to face Chelsea, there were two heroes. The first was goalscorer Aaron Cresswell, who bagged in yet another win over a big six side, but the man of the hour was debutant David Martin. Coming in for calamity man Roberto Jimenez, Martin was sublime against the Blues, winning the man of the match (BBC) and helping to deliver the Irons a massive three points that could prove crucial come the end of the season.
