Opinion: Pellegrini’s latest decision could benefit West Ham immensely

|

Manuel Pellegrini is allegedly set to give Winston Reid the chance to prove himself at West Ham United this summer, according to a report by Claret and Hugh.

As we all know, the New Zealand international has had to watch his team-mates from the stands along with us for the last season because of a troublesome knee injury.

However, the 30-year-old could still be someone who could offer us plenty in the future; provided he returns to fitness and can remain available.

The centre-back has been a loyal servant for the club over the years and was once one name that was always guaranteed to be on the teamsheet.

Although it would be unlikely to see him replace the likes of Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena in the first-team to begin with, Reid is a defender that knows what it takes to play in the Premier League and can offer Pellegrini a different option to consider if required.

Realistically, it would be difficult to see any other club deciding to take a risk on him this summer after a season out of action. So trying to offload him as West Ham had originally had plans to do would be a hugely challenging and time-consuming task this summer and one we cannot afford to allow with other areas of the squad needing to be improved.

If Reid can show that he is up to scratch during the Premier League Asia Trophy pre-season tournament, keeping him at the London Stadium would make sense and will show that Pellegrini was right to hold fire on his time at the club.
