Opinion: Pellegrini’s latest coup could have landed West Ham the signing of the season

|

The early coup for Pablo Fornals that Manuel Pellegrini got through back in mid-June looked like a superb deal, bringing in the 23-year-old for £24m (BBC).

However, the latest deal that’s seen the superb Sebastien Haller sign is even better, and the Frenchman could be the signing of the season.

Haller has officially signed for the Hammers after days of anticipation. The fee of £45m, via BBC, should be more than justified by the goals that he’ll bring and the points he’ll win for the club over the course of the 2019/20 season, especially with the likes of Fornals, Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini creating chances for the big man.

Eintracht Frankfurt were a force last season. The Bundesliga side played extremely well in the Europa League, dumping out Marseille in the group stages before going onto end Rapid Wien, Inter Milan and Benfica’s European adventure before having their own dream ended in the last four by Chelsea, but that wouldn’t have happened without Haller.

The big Frenchman bagged an incredible 20 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for the German club last, despite having plenty of competition from the likes of Ante Rebic and Luka Jovic, the latter of which has now moved to Real Madrid after an impressive 27-goal season (Sky Sports), so considering who he was competing with, Haller’s numbers are even more impressive.

At the age of just 25-years-old, Haller has plenty to give and many years of goalscoring form ahead of him. His age will also make him a breath of fresh air in the striking department at London Stadium, with Marko Arnautovic and Lucas Perez sold and Andy Carroll released, with that trio all 30-years-old and getting on before their exit.

That leaves Javier Hernandez, Michail Antonio and Haller as the three options at the club, and the goals that the trio can bring in will be crucial to any potential push for a spot in the top six or top eight for the Irons in the Premier League next season.
