Opinion: Out of favour West Ham man has bought himself more time with United display

|

West Ham fans will not want to forget yesterday in a hurry. Not only did they smash Manchester United in almost every department at The London Stadium, but they were treated to an absolute peach of a goal from unfancied full-back Aaron Cresswell.

The only reason that Cresswell was given the chance to start against United was because of the red card that Mike Dean harshly dished out to Arthur Masuaku against Aston Villa in the 0-0 draw at Villa Park last Monday, but the Englishman certainly took his chance.

The left-back was sublime throughout the clash and did well to marshal the man who Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lined up to face him wide on the right, Andreas Pereira. Then, as we all saw and enjoyed, there was the icing on the cake of a top performance as he rifled in a free-kick past David De Gea.

Before today, the only game that Cresswell had played in the Premier League this season was against Manchester City as the Cityzens rocked up at the London Stadium and smashed five past the sorry Hammers. Now, though, the Irons are working to fix their goal difference and Cresswell’s goal helped.

The result also means that the Hammers are now three points ahead of Manchester United and have gone six games unbeaten since that Man City drubbing. Next up is a clash in the Carabao Cup against Oxford United too, and whoever starts at left-back will be telling.

Masuaku has now served his ban and could be set to come in for Cresswell as the Hammers could rotate for the cup clash. However, with Bournemouth the bigger clash this week, whether or not Cresswell keeps his place in the Premier League is going to be a hot topic, but he’s certainly earned more time
