Opinion: Key West Ham man could benefit from taking a break from international football

|

West Ham fans have got so much time for Declan Rice. The young English midfield man is one hell of a player and when he’s on his best form he can be one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League, yet this season his form has seriously dropped off.

A lot of his poor form and the headlines surrounding him has been because of his displays for his country. Back in October, it was the clash with the Czech Republic which England lost 2-1 where the midfielder came in for a lot of stick, and even in the recent 4-0 win over Kosovo reviews of the defensive midfield man weren’t glowing.

That loss in the Czech Republic saw The Express give Rice a lowly 4/10 rating, and whilst he didn’t get a rating quite that low in his most recent international outing in Pristina, as Sky Sports gave the West Ham man a 5/10 for his part in the 4-0 win.

Regaining form will be absolutely key for Rice if he wants to make himself an England regular, but given the negative press he’s been getting during his time with the national team, having a break from playing under Gareth Southgate and getting away from the spotlight could be key.

Fortunately, the next set of internationals that Rice could be set to feature in won’t be played until March, when the next international break rears its head, and even if Rice has recovered his form by then, it could be best for Rice to sit out of the two friendlies before coming back into the squad for the Euros.

Is Declan Rice the best midfielder in the world?

Yes

No

Rice is undoubtedly good enough to be in the England squad and so long as he doesn’t pick up an injury he’ll be in the squad for Euro 2020, but for now, it might be best for him to sit out of Southgate’s squad, regain his form for his club and then come back in for the summer competition.
