Opinion: It’s high time that West Ham underwent a serious rebuild regardless of division

|

The current crop of West Ham players is not one that at all lacks talent. There is a massive amount of ability in David Moyes’ side, yet for some reason, the team is hugely underperforming and relegation is starting to look like a real threat, and a season in the Championship isn’t what the fans want.

However, whether or not the Hammers find themselves playing in either the Premier League or the Championship next season it’s high time that a serious rebuild is enforced at the club, with a number of deadweights needing to be removed from the squad and plenty of new faces needed.

It does need to be said that adding the likes of Pablo Fornals, Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen in the last two transfer windows represented fantastic business from the Irons, however, there are plenty of examples of awful business as well when it comes to the Stratford club.

Lukasz Fabianski is a real fan favourite, but at the age of 34-years-old he’s not getting any better, much like deputy shot-stopper Darren Randolph who is 32 and the third choice David Martin, also 34. That’s just the start, though, as there are many more positions that need strengthening.

In defence, Pablo Zabaleta will be off, whilst of the three centre-halves at the club, Fabian Balbuena will be 29-years-old next season and Angelo Ogbonna will be 32, and bringing in a new centre-back could be key, especially considering the lack of spending on the defence in recent years.

Midfield, though, is where things get turgid. The likes of Carlos Sanchez, Andriy Yarmolenko, Jack Wilshere and Manuel Lanzini have all had huge injury problems and look like their best days are behind them, and removing the quartet would free up an awful lot of space on the wage bill.

Where will we be playing next season?

Premier League

Championship

Upfront there are fewer problems, but Sebastien Haller looks nowhere near a £45m striker (BBC), whilst Albian Ajeti is seemingly so far out of the picture that many fans will have forgotten about him.

These aren’t the sort of issues that can be resolved in one summer, but they’re issues that need to be addressed, and it’s high time that the club had a long hard look at the squad and made some much-needed changes, especially if they’re serious about trying to push up the Premier League table.
