Opinion: European bargain signing could surprise West Ham fans

|

West Ham are reportedly preparing a bid for Kostas Fortounis, Football.London report via Greek radio station Radio Sport24.

The price suggested is around the £8.8million mark, according to Radio Sport24, but it is likely that Olympiakos will want more than that for one of their key players.

Burnley showed interest in him last summer, as did Norwich earlier this season, which doesn’t exactly fill you with hope. However, the attacking midfielder, 26, scored 20 goals and assisted six in 45 appearances for club and country this season, one of which came against AC Milan in the Europa League.

There is the caveat that the Greek Super League is at a much weaker level than the Premier League, but our last signing from Greece, and indeed Olympiakos, was Arthur Masuaku and whatever you think of him, he has made the step up, even if his defensive capabilities leave a lot to be desired at times.

There is an argument that at under £10million, this signing is relatively low-risk. What we need right now is someone who will be fit across the season, who will show desire and give his all – Fortounis provides that.
