Opinion: Darren Bent couldn’t be more wrong; West Ham ace needs to remain at the club

The rivalry between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur is usually a hotly contested one. The Hammers love a win against the Lilywhites, and in reason years they’ve secured a few of them along the way, including one last season making them the first side to win away at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, when it comes to their standings in the Premier League over the last few seasons, Spurs have been streaks ahead of the Irons. The current league table does have the Hammers one point and one place ahead of Spurs, and to keep things that way, they need to avoid taking Darren Bent’s advice.

The former Premier League striker and one of the 28 members of the elusive 100 club has come out with a questionable statement, claiming that Tottenham should look to bring in West Ham’s dominant central defender Issa Diop, whilst speaking to Football Insider.

The Frenchman is one of the most impressive young defenders in the Premier League at the moment and has found a real home for himself at The London Stadium. At the age of just 22-years-old, we’re not expecting him to stick around forever as a Hammer, but he certainly shouldn’t leave just yet, and certainly not for Tottenham.

If Spurs do take an interest in Diop and follow up on Bent’s advice, though, they won’t be the first top side in the Premier League to try and poach the young defender from the Irons. as Manchester United were reportedly looking into the possibility of bringing Diop to Old Trafford in the summer, according to Sky Sports.

However, Diop stayed at The London Stadium then, and he should do so now. The Frenchman is a top player in his own right, but he’s still learning his trade at his young age, so improving as a player, helping the Irons climb the Premier League and maybe get into Europe has to be his priority, not moving on anytime soon, and certainly not moving on and signing for Spurs.
