Next Mesut Ozil would set West Ham up for years – opinion

Manuel Pellegrini had a creativity crisis earlier in the season, but he can set the club for years with the capture of Erkan Eyibil, who has been linked with a move to West Ham by Turkish Football.

The 17-year-old has soared through the youth ranks at Mainz 05 in such quick ascendency that he is now considered to be one of the top youth talents in Germany, and has been nicknamed the ‘new Mesut Ozil’.

Like Arsenal’s attacking midfielder, Eyibil is also a left-footed German national of Turkish descent and is expected to make his Under 18 international debut for Die Mannschaft against France at the end of the month.

The possibility to snatch Die Nullfünfer’s rising star has come around as the teenager will be entering the final year of his current contract at the Opel Arena in the summer, and is yet to commit his future to the Bundesliga outfit.

Despite his age, the wonderkid is currently banging on the door of the first-team, and any scouts sent by West Ham will have witnessed Eyibil score 12 goals and five assists in 18 games this term, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory away to FSV Frankfurt U19 over the weekend.

Capturing his potential would go a long way in the Hammers securing a future creative genius and reduce the chances of repeating the crisis Pellegrini endured earlier in the campaign.

Being 17, however, Eyibil will require some time to adapt to the English game in our youth system, so the club should consider his acquisition alongside renewing Samir Nasri’s contract.

The Frenchman has not got years left in him, but the former Manchester City star has shown that he still has a lot to offer his former manager so long as he can stay fit, and the rarely seen ace can be replaced by the Mainz product when the time is right.
