Mistake: West Ham’s latest target wouldn’t solve a single problem for Pellegrini – opinion

|

According to Turkish publication Takvim, West Ham are among the clubs interested in a move for Shinji Kagawa. He currently plays for Besiktas, where he is on loan from Borussia Dortmund, and he is apparently available for around £10.70 million.

In today’s market, that’s not a lot of money for a player with bags of experience, including a stint in the Premier League, but it’s fair to say that at present, Kagawa doesn’t look to be the player that West Ham need.

After all, his time in the Premier League was largely marred by disappointment. He was a creative force in Germany and looked ideal for England, but he just failed to settle. After bagging a total of just 6 goals in England during a 2-year stint at Man Utd, he was eventually shipped back to Germany – and no Man Utd fans were likely very upset to see him go. He’d been well below par.

For West Ham, too, it’s hard to see what he offers. He’s a good passer of the ball, but his form as really taken a downturn in recent months, and he’s far from a guaranteed starter at the London Stadium.

Not to mention, do our needs really lie in his position? We’ve got a lot of creativity in the team at present, including the likes of Felipe Anderson and Samir Nasri, and so where would Kagawa feature? Our needs would be far better served with a move for a striker or a defender – and we all know how limited our funds have been at points in recent seasons.

Kagawa is a decent player, but is he a good fit for us? It’s hard to say that he would.
