“Needs to take control” – Pundit backs Moyes in transfer war with lazy West Ham owners

|

West Ham United icon Frank McAvennie has backed David Moyes to take control of the Irons’ transfers as David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady are being ‘lazy’ with their management of the summer window.

McAvennie has slammed the Hammers ownership for not putting enough effort into strengthening Moyes’ squad this summer, having thus far failed to add any new faces beyond taking up our option-to-buy January loan arrival Tomas Soucek for €21million (£19.1m).

Co-Chairman and owner Gold is believed to have taken on a more integral role in West Ham’s transfers following the departure of Mario Husillos from the position of Director of Football, having been fired alongside Manuel Pellegrini after a string of costly deals failed to lift the club up the Premier League table.

Moyes arrived back at the London Stadium last December to salvage the 2019/20 campaign, but has begun the new season with the same players at his disposal who helped secure our survival by five points.

McAvennie is at a loss to why West Ham are operating in the way the club appears to be, and has urged Moyes to take a leading role in negotiations as a ‘football guy’ should be at the forefront of our transfers.

“I look and think: ‘Who is buying the players?’” McAvennie told Football Insider. “If it is the owners who are buying the players, that is not how you run a club. That is not the way you do it. They have got to get someone to oversee every signing.

“By the looks of it, there is not a lot of thought going into transfers. Moyes needs to take more control.

“They need to take the transfer decisions away from the owners. I always think that it should be a football guy buying footballers.”

Will West Ham sign any players before the Oct 5 deadline?

Yes

No

McAvennie suggesting the ownership have been lazy with their management of the summer window comes as the latest strike to go against Gold, Sullivan and Brady from one of our former star players, as Trevor Sinclair recently slammed them for our lack of business too.

All the while, pressure from supporters continues to grow with the momentum surrounding the GSB Out campaign, with a small number of fans displaying an anti-ownership banner outside the London Stadium ahead of last week’s curtain-raiser defeat to Newcastle United.

With just over two weeks left of the summer window, Gold, Sullivan and Brady will need to act fast to get supporters back on side… as much as they can, at least.
