Lukasz Fabianski admits club need to improve on the basics of football following opening day defeat

Lukasz Fabianski has admitted that West Ham need to improve on the basics of playing football following their opening game defeat to Manchester City.

Speaking to the Hammers official website, the Polish international reflected on the 5-0 defeat against the reigning Premier League champions that sees West Ham go into the second week of the season at bottom of the league table for the third year in a row.

Fabianski said: “We know that we have to make some improvements on certain things and that’s what we’ve focused on. I wouldn’t call it a ‘wake-up’ call, but I think we have realised we have a lot of room to improve on the basic aspects of playing football, really.”

“I think Manchester City are the champions of the Premier League and probably the best team out there at the moment so, if you want to compete against them, then you need to play to the best of your abilities.

Although the thrashing from City will be seen by many as an embarrassing result for many, Fabianski believes that even in such a high-scoring defeat there were some moments in the game where the Hammers could compete with Pep Guardiola’s side

The 34-year-old shot-stopper said: “I think we did that in some moments of the game (matched Man City) and that gives us some small belief that for some time in the game we could compete on a good level but then, like I said before, there are still some things that we have to improve.

“There are some things to learn from that game that if we continue to work and we continue to put a lot of focus on the things that are really important in the game, then anything is possible and you can reach a higher level in the game.”

With Brighton next up for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, the Hammers will be hoping to get their Premier League season back on track with a win against Graham Potter’s team.
