For Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy, it was another tough day at the office as a 19th Premiership defeat left the Wearsiders facing relegation full in the face.

McCarthy: ‘We played better with 10 men today than we did with 11 on Tuesday (in the 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough)!

‘Apart from the header from Ashton [on 65 minutes], they have not had any real attempts on our goal, and I thought it was going to be our day.

‘Our lads have given gutsy displays all season. It might turn out we are not good enough, but what has never been in question is the work-rate and endeavour.

‘They showed pride in themselves and the club because they have worked really hard.’
