Green Keeps Us in Games

It would be easy to give Robert Green a lot of grief after his recent fumble in the Chelsea game. I`m sure a few fans will be pointing to his World Cup mistake to make a case for dropping the shot-stopper. But I`m with Scott Parker on this one,

“Greeny is a very strong character. There has been more than one time since I have been here that he has kept us in the game.”

It`s important to remember that Green made some crucial saves against Chelsea. Even with the latest fumble he looked odds on to recover the ball before Upson charged in. Of course, Upson was reacting as we`d expect him to do but he can`t be blameless for pinging the ball low and up the field into a crowded penalty area. Even then it was a desperately unlucky goal to concede.

Parker continues,

“‘That is what happens. When you are a keeper one mistake is highlighted where I can probably go and make five mistakes and no one speaks about them. As a keeper you make one mistake and it is punished. He is a great keeper.”

Green`s overall performance wasn`t a shambles and I can`t see any benefit to the team to crucify him for that mistake. We need our best keeper behind the sticks and until Ruud or Marek prove otherwise that`s Robert Green.
