After finally getting over the injuries that have blighted the past few seasons Danny Gabbidon has been a welcome sight on the pitch this season. With only one year left on his current contract the 31-year-old is keen to show that he`s worthy of an extension. talkSport quote the defender,
“This is the last year of my deal and it’s a big season for me, trying to stay fit, play a lot of games and prove I am worthy of a new contract
“We haven’t started talking about a new contract – I think I might have to prove my fitness for a little bit longer.
“But if I keep playing, and playing well, then hopefully that will come.”
Clearly staying fit and playing regularly is the only goal that matters and that`s why I think he`s decided to retire from international football. Focusing on his club form has to be the best thing for his career going forward.
In a statement from the Football Association of Wales he said,
“After nine fantastic years, during which I had the honour and privilege of captaining my country, and after long consideration, I have decided to retire from international duty.
“I would like to thank the Football Association of Wales for their support over the years and I would like to thank the people of Wales who supported me and my team-mates at every game, home and away, giving their all to the cause – true supporters. It has been a wonderful journey.”
Gabbdion represented Wales 43 times and was named in the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
At the moment it feels like we have quite a few centre-backs vying for a spot in the starting line-up and who knows we might even sign another left-back one of these days. It`s difficult to know what this might mean for Gabbidon`s future at West Ham. To get a new deal I suspect he`ll have to continue to show his versatility as a full-back.
