Friendly loss shows lack of firepower

West Ham lost one-nil yesterday to Napoli in the Bobby Moore Cup. Fabio Quagliarella headed home in the second half for the Italians, capitalising on a mix-up between Green and Upson. More worrying however, was the lack of striking options for the Hammers.

Carlton Cole looked sharp and held the ball up well, but needs a nippy striking partner to support him. Jiminez and Dyer looked good, with the former treating the crowd to some delightful touches. Too many times the home team tried to pass the ball into the net, if we are going to play with just one up front we must learn to shoot more, and score far more from midfield.

Zola is aware of the need for at least one more striker, and the club have released a statement saying that work is being done behind the scenes to ensure we get a forward in. This is all very well, and we all know how rare 20 goal a season men are in the Premier League. Saying this, following the release of Di Michele and Tristan it was blatantly obvious we need strikers, and they should have been signed by now.
