Free-scoring loanee could be the answer to replace 31-y/o attacker – Opinion

Although West Ham are yet to get started in the Premier League, you will find it difficult to seek fans who were unhappy with the clubs summer dealings.

Manuel Pellegrini managed to ship off a great deal of deadwood, releasing the likes of Andy Carroll and Samir Nasri as well as managing to sell the likes of Pedro Obiang, Lucas Perez and Marko Arnautovic, and the Chilean also managed to bring in some top quality players and some of Europe’s most highly sought after properties, namely Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals.

Indeed, the Hammers had one of the most efficient transfer windows out of any Premier League side, managing to offload expensive and troublesome figures whilst also being able to sign players who can genuinely take West Ham to the next level as the season progresses, but one name that many were surprised not to see head out the exit door is Javier Hernandez.

The 31-year-old attacker has been underwhelming during his time in east London, leading many to suspect that the Mexican international could be off in this summer.

However, Hernandez remained and was even handed the number 9 shirt vacated by Carroll. Yet despite this odd turn in events, it still seemingly appears the former Manchester United star could be off this season.

Football Insider report that a handful of MLS teams are interested in taking Hernandez on a cut-price deal, with the report saying that bids of just £4m could be enough to see the ageing attacker depart the London Stadium.

Seeing the Mexican leave would not be a sad sight to many West Ham fans, however, it does mean that a striker position in the squad will need to be refilled, and Pellegrini could turn to striker Jordan Hugill, currently on loan at Queens Park Rangers, to take this spot.

The 27-year-old striker is currently flourishing with the Championship side, scoring twice in four games for the west London club and already looking like a player who is on a mission to prove his parent side how wrong they were to ship him out back to the second-tier.

Hugill is yet to impress in the claret and blue, playing just 22 minutes of football since his move to West Ham in 2018, yet if Hernandez is to leave, the former Preston North End striker could serve as a solid backup centre forward for Pellegrini’s side.

The Middlesbrough-born striker has proven to be a solid Championship striker, and heading into the prime years of his career, Hugill could be ready to take up the mantle as a Premier League striker for West Ham if their Mexican striker decides to depart.
