Could the improbable be about to happen?

Perhaps so!

According to the popular tabloid news source, the Mirror, somebody who went from hero to villain could be set to make a dramatic return to the club.

During his time with the club, Dimitri Payet enthralled us all with his skills, the attacking midfielder was the spark in our side when it came to producing the unexpected.

But then it all went very sour!

Payet decided that he wanted to leave the Hammers and was, subsequently, sold to the French club Marseille.

However, fast forward eighteen months and the scenario appears to have changed dramatically

Our source is suggesting that Payet has been offered to the club in a transfer package and that Manuel Pellegrini is keen for the player to make the move.

But, our source is pointing out there is one major stumbling block to be overcome, Payet’s salary demands would have to be reduced.

However, would a return to the club be something that the Hammers support would welcome?

Would they be prepared to let bygones be bygones or did the Frenchman permanently blot his copybook when he decided West Ham was no longer the club for him eighteen months ago?

At 31-years-of-age, Payet probably has a couple of years left in those magical boots but my view is that it would be a mistake to re-sign the player after he departed in such acrimonious circumstances.

But, what are your views on the subject matter?

Are you for or against Payet returning to the club?

Please feel free to leave your views in the comments facility beneath this article.

  • he left under a cloud, but in my opinion, he still is a fabulous player, and could most certainly give west ham more attacking options. so I say yes to him re joining us.

  • Traitor as he was if he come back and puts a great through ball in to one of our forwards the crowd would start slowly singing we’ve got Payer Dmitry Payet … Fickle lot football supporters …

    • Fickle you say, the blokes a disgrace to football and the fans the way he treated the club, we don’t need the Pratt , we got Wiltshire , soon hopsfully Anderson and arnie and a few more I would have in the team than him , he’s just after another payday so it’s a big no from me.

  • If we can sign him for a reasonable price, do it! We are still lacking creativity, especially with Lanzini out for a long period.

  • Hell no, we as a club and fans need to retain our integrity and honour, something Payet never showed with the manner of his departure. He never even thanked us for giving him the platform to be great. He is also 31 and just returning from a serious injury so I think his best is past him. I do think that the player being discussed to return is actually Defoe and not Payet
