Plenty of West Ham United fans have been looking back on club legend Paulo Di Canio and his stunning goals during our 3-2 win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 2002.
The club’s official Twitter account shared clips of both goals that the former Italy U21 international scored against our London rivals.
Jermaine Defoe opened the scoring for us four minutes before half-time that cancelled out Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s penalty. Di Canio then pulled off a picturesque volley in the second half before the Blues’ Gianfranco Zola levelled with a free-kick.
With six minutes of normal time remaining, Di Canio scored the winner that helped us to our first win of the 2002/03 campaign.
Those were the good old days. Our number 10 ending his Hammers career with 51 goals and conjured up 14 assists in 135 appearances.
As a result, supporters drooled over the Italian’s brace and made their feelings clear on social media. One fan said that it “doesn’t get much better” than Di Canio, while another stated that he simply loves him. Another supporter added that his first goal was “sensational”.
How much does the club mean to that man? Love him ⚒
