We are close to the signing of highly-rated Italian striker Alessandro Diamanti from Livorno after club president Aldo Spinelli confirmed the deal was almost done.

‘It’s practically done for Diamanti to West Ham,’ said Spinelli.

‘The player deserves to make the step-up after his stint at Livorno. Just a few details need to be finalised before the move becomes official.’

Livorno sporting director Nelso Ricci confirmed the transfer fee that his team will receive from the English club.

‘West Ham will pay ?6.5million over three years. We couldn’t have kept a player who wanted to leave for another club. Diamanti told us he wanted to go to England as it was a chance of a lifetime for him,’ added Ricci.

On Monday, Diamanti said joining West Ham would be a ‘dream move’.

Diamanti looks to be the first of two strikers to join the club this week, with uncertainty over who the other one will be with Chamakh apparently rejected a chance to move to the Boleyn.
