West Ham manager Alan Curbishley was relieved to see his side scrape through against Coventry in tonight’s Carling Cup fixture and praised matchwinner Carlton Cole:

‘Coley’s worked ever so hard and deserved his goal,’ Curbs told the official website. ‘I hope it gives him more confidence because we play next at Upton Park and I hope he carries on. He has had to wait for his chance and he is now grabbing it.’

Carlton has become the talk of Upton Park recently, and being the only fit striker at the club, will probably remain so for the forseeable future. His second goal in three games cannot have done his confidence any harm. Curbs believes that Cole relished playing as a lone striker:

‘He finds it easier to play up there on his own, it is there for him, he understands what he has got to do.’

What Carlton finds difficult to understand about playing up front alongside another striker is a matter of speculation, but here’s hoping for some more match winning goals!
