“Can’t help but feel” – Roshane Thomas gives his verdict on West Ham’s draw with Newcastle

|

Sunday was a frustrating one for West Ham United.

After taking the lead twice, the Hammers were forced to settle to a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Michail Antonio gave the visitors the lead after just four minutes after pouncing on Jamaal Lascelles loose ball but it was soon cancelled out by Miguel Almiron 15 minutes later.

David Moyes’ side then went in front for a second time as Tomas Soucek fired in from close range. However, it took just 92 seconds for Newcastle to find a reply, as Jonjo Shelvey found the back of the net for the hosts.

Despite their attacking prowess, West Ham were unable to turn the screw on their North East opponents and were forced to share the spoils.

Replying to a fan on The Athletic’s Q&A session, Roshane Thomas summarised his feelings on the encounter.

After this result, will West Ham stay in the Premier League?

Yes

No

No

“Decent point in the end”, he said. “Can’t help but feel West Ham should’ve won that game, though. Four points clear of the relegation zone.”

Thomas added a special mention to both Soucek and Declan Rice, who he was left thoroughly impressed by.

It will have felt like it was two points dropped. Not only because of how close the club are to the drop zone but also because of how positive the Hammers were in their play.

Moyes’ men created 15 chances and had a total of 17 shots, with seven of those on target and a total of 182 touches in the Magpies’ half, as per Fotmob.

What we saw was such an improvement to the Wolves and Spurs games, as our form is slowly starting to improve as the games pass by.

Let’s just hope that West Ham do not look back on this result in regret if the worst-case scenario happens.
