Better off in the past: West Ham are right to not be interested in possible transfer target – Opinion

|

Rumours regarding a West Ham United return for Dimitri Payet appear to have gone into overdrive recently as fans have been reacting on Twitter to the news that the club may have the chance to re-sign him this summer.

According to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee on Twitter, the former star has been linked with a move back to the London Stadium as Olympique de Marseille are thought to be in dire straits when it comes to their finances and are looking to bankroll a huge sale (Get French Football News).

However, he also stressed that the club were not interested in bringing him back at the moment.

And, we would have to agree with that stance as we think it would be best to avoid signing Payet once again.

Of course, there is no denying how good of a player he was for us and how much quality he brought to the team, however, the way he decided to leave us was nothing short of upsetting and disappointing.

Potentially on the verge of becoming a club legend for us, it would be hard to say that a reunion with him would help him to make us forget about the whole saga in January 2017 where he went on strike (Telegraph).

Also, Payet is hardly the same player he was back then and we have moved on in a different direction to when he was originally with us.

With the arrival of Pablo Fornals this summer and with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko and Michail Antonio all in the squad, it is difficult to see where the France international would fit in the team.

Indeed, he is also 32-years-old now, so he would hardly seem to fit into Manuel Pellegrini’s plans and he certainly does not appear to be the type of target that Mario Husillos would look to acquire as he has proved over the years that he likes to sign players who are young and hungry for success (club’s official website).

West Ham would be better off leaving Payet in the past and enjoying what he did for us on the pitch whilst we were at Upton Park and should look to avoid re-opening any wounds that fans may still have this summer.
