West Ham fans will be encouraged to hear that Dean Ashton’s road to recovery, which reached a significant milestone with a substitute appearance against Spurs on Sunday, continued apace with two goals for the reserves on Monday night. West Ham’s second string travelled up to Burton to face their Derby equivalent and came away with an 8-0 win.

Reserve manager Kevin Keen said: ‘The boys were outstanding. We played fast- attacking football and it was so pleasing to watch.’ Ashton was not the only ‘big name’ in the squad with Scott Parker also playing 90 minutes. Fringe players Pantsil, Quashie and Dailly also featured.

Aside from Ashton’s brace, there were goals from Hogan Ephraim, Kyel Reid, captain Jack Collison and a Derby own goal whilst Junior Stanislas followed Deano’s example and bagged two for himself.

It’s been so long since Ashton was playing regularly that it seems almost unbelievable that he could soon be fighting Carlton Cole for a place in the starting line up.
