Alleged transfer target makes no sense for Pellegrini and West Ham – Opinion

|

It might be the start of a new week, however, one strange transfer rumour regarding West Ham United and a certain area of the field continues to be peddled through the mill.

Last week, Spanish media outlet Sport (via Sport Witness) had claimed the Hammers were interested in signing Jasper Cillessen this summer despite the fact that we already have three goalkeepers on the books, with two of those set to join us at the beginning of the next month. Dropping the Poland international after he made the most saves in the Premier League last season and won our Hammer of the Year award would not make any sense.

That left us doubting any substance to the links because it just does not appear to be a position that we will be looking to strengthen at the moment – Lukasz Fabianski was outstanding for us last season and is likely going to remain our number one for a couple of years yet.

However, media outlets in Italy have decided to link us with another top quality shot-stopper this summer; Thomas Strakosha.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim the SS Lazio ‘keeper is thought to be on our radar (as well as Arsenal’s) and it is just as difficult to understand as the Cillessen rumour from last week.

There is no doubt that the Albania international would be a quality addition at the London Stadium and the 24-year-old could certainly be an exciting addition for us – in his 44 matches for Lazio last season, he kept 13 clean sheets and conceded just 46 goals (Transfermarkt).

However, he is hardly what we need at the present moment and Manuel Pellegrini surely has other areas of the squad that need immediate attention before adding a fourth goalkeeper to his ranks.

The media can bring up some exciting but rather questionable stories once the transfer window comes by and we would have to say this is just another one of those rumours that must be taken with a pinch of salt.
