AFC Wimbledon vs West Ham: A chance for much-needed momentum

|

Despite enjoying a very productive transfer window, we have endured a particularly difficult start to the new season. Difficult challenges against Liverpool and Arsenal was coupled with a disappointing collapse at home against Bournemouth. Tonight’s Carabao Cup game against Wimbledon is a perfect opportunity to attain much-needed momentum.

While the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini rightly evoked excitement among the West Ham faithful, we have failed to overcome a tricky start to the new campaign, in addition to failing to familiarise with the Chilean’s tactics.

Despite the plethora of new signings that we completed during the summer transfer window, it’s clear that the players are still adapting to life at a new club, while existing members of the squad are still familiarising themselves with the demands and expectations of Manuel Pellegrini.

This has been best exemplified by our woeful defensive record so far. Naturally, it would be wholly unrealistic and far too optimistic to expect us to beat the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal. Ultimately, our prospective success this season isn’t dependent on our ability to triumph against the odds against the division’s best.

Nonetheless, a total of seven goals conceded against them is a worrying statistic, and most troubling of all was the nature in which we lost the advantage against Bournemouth, especially at home. To concede two goals in the space of six minutes, and to fail to attain a single point, is frankly unacceptable.

Therefore, tonight’s game against League One opposition is far more significant than a standard cup-tie. As is customary for the competition, we could see several first-team players being rested, but it also offers the opportunity for new players to make their mark and secure a crucial victory.

On the surface, the game might be seen by outsiders as rather inconsequential, but it could be the fixture that will help kick-start our season.
