26-year-old international has the potential to become a cult figure – opinion

|

Despite the millions that we spent during the summer transfer window and the big-name players that opted to make the switch to the London Stadium, Fabian Balbuena has seemingly gone under the radar of some Premier League enthusiasts.

Over the course of the summer, it was apparent that the club were seeking defensive reinforcement, and the arrival of Fabian Balbuena was aligned with the profile that the defence were requiring. The Paraguay international is a traditional and conventional centre-half, who isn’t afraid of clearing the ball when needed.

His start to life hasn’t been sensational, nor has it been poor. In truth, it’s a serviceable start to life in a new division, one that is regarded as one of the most competitive, physical and fast leagues in world football. With that in mind, it’s vital that we grant Balbuena the time adapt and familiarise himself to the pressures associated with playing in England’s top-flight.

In his defence, a Premier League debut against Liverpool – one of the most potent attacking sides in world football – was hardly the most comfortable start to life in England. That said, he has recorded decent displays in both of his performances for the club, and if his transition is successful, then he has the potential to become a very likeable figure among supporters.

As mentioned previously, his approach to his defensive work is rather orthodox, and during his spell with Corinthians, he was regarded as one of the best defenders in the Brazilian league. Once the team begins to stabilise and successfully implement Pellegrini’s ideas and tactics, then I suspect that Balbuena will thrive, and he’ll be regarded as a very astute signing.  While he may not be the most accomplished ball-playing defender, his no-nonsense mentality could help augment our defensive qualities.
